Nova Scotia Group plans return!
Last year, a 42-strong group
from the Canadian province visited
the Wee County and Stirling
to encourage business and tourism
links.
The founder of Nova Scotia,
William Alexander, was originally
from Menstrie, and the delegation
visited the village last year
for a special Maple Tree planting
ceremony in Menstrie Gardens,
which has been renamed Nova
Scotia Gardens.
They plan to return again in
September – again led by Warden
Fred Whalen, of Kings County,
but with a larger group of around
60 members – when they hope to
hold another tree planting in the
gardens.
Ian Russell, a former
Clackmannanshire resident now
living in Nova Scotia has been
instrumental in establishing ties
between the two areas.
He said, “We would like to hold
another Clackmannanshire Day
on Friday 10 September, which is
Nova Scotia Day, and we feel it
would be appropriate to mark the
day by visiting Menstrie.
“We would like to do another
Maple Tree planting in the Nova
Scotia Gardens, this time in honour
the late Ann Longley, who
was a stalwart in making sure
that last year’s Nova Scotia Week
went ahead.
“Ann tragically died very
suddenly upon our return last
September and I have to tell you
that we all miss her. Ann was the
municipal clerk for Kings County
and we could not have made Nova
Scotia Week happen without her.
“She loved Menstrie and the
Wee County.”
Ian added he would also be
delighted to welcome a group
from Clackmannanshire to Nova
Scotia.
“I want us to build upon the
relationship that we have formed
and to grow all the opportunities
to do business and encourage
tourism both ways,” he said.
“I think the Wee County would
see great benefits from a visit.”
