Wind Farms a Distraction?

from thisislincolnshire

Wind farm could be 'distraction to motorists'
Tuesday, January 19, 2010,
Plans to build eight 125-metre high wind turbines in rural Lincolnshire could distract motorists, according to a new independent report.
Energy company Enertrag UK is hoping to develop a wind farm on land between Baumber and Wispington, near Horncastle.
But consultants assessing the project, at the request of East Lindsey District Council, believe there is evidence the wind farm will pose a problem to drivers using Bardney Road.
The report states turbines built on either side of the road would provide a "striking feature" which would "draw the eye" of motorists travelling south along the carriageway.
The document, which analyses the environmental statement submitted by Enertrag UK, reads: "In the case of Baumber, the fact the road runs through the wind farm will undeniably create a distraction for drivers. It is, in itself, a distinctive feature that may attract visitors.
"The road is of adequate width, but the close proximity to the bend in the road and the relationship to the minor road junctions to the south, suggests potential for an accident."
The document adds that traffic on the road is not heavy and there have been two accidents in recent years, but East Lindsey District Council can consider the distraction issue as a reason to lodge an objection.
The report also assesses issues ranging from noise, vibration and ecology, with the information in many sections described as "adequate" and some as "thorough".
Enertrag UK project manager David Linley said he was confident in the company's environmental statement.
He added previous planning decisions on projects had not stalled because of concerns that turbines could distract motorists.
